چکیده

We present a method for evaluating the welfare of a decision maker, based on observed choice data. Unlike the standard economic theory of revealed preference, our method is can be used whether or not the observed choices are rational. Paralleling the standard theory we present a model for choice such that the observations arise "as if" they were the result of a speci…c decision making process. However, in place of the usual preference relation whose maximization induces the observations, we explain choice as arising from a compromise among a set of simultaneously-held, con‡icting preference relations. As in revealed preference theory, these simultaneously held preferences are inferred from the choice data and we use them as the basis to discuss the decision maker’s welfare. In general our method does not yield a unique set of explanatory preferences and therefore we characterize all the explanatory sets of preferences. We use this set to compute bounds on welfare changes. We show that some standard results of rational choice theory can be extended to irrational decision makers. The theory can be used to explore a number of context-dependent choice patterns found in psychological experiments. JEL Classi…cation: D01, D11, D60

Uncovered set choice rules

I study necessary and sufficient conditions for a choice function to be rationalised in the following sense: there exists a complete asymmetric relation T (a tournament) such that for each feasible (finite) choice situation, the choice coincides with the uncovered set of T . This notion of rationality explains not only cyclical and contextdependent choices observed in practice, but also provide...

Arrow's Axiom and Full Rationality for Fuzzy Choice Functions

A classical result for crisp choice functions shows the equivalence between Arrow axiom and the property of full rationality. In this paper we study a fuzzy form of Arrow axiom formulated in terms of the subsethood degree and of the degree of equality (of fuzzy sets). We prove that a fuzzy choice function verifies Fuzzy Arrow Axiom if and only if it is (fuzzy) full rational. We also show that t...

Judgment aggregation without full rationality

Several recent results on the aggregation of judgments over logically connected propositions show that, under certain conditions, dictatorships are the only propositionwise aggregation functions generating fully rational (i.e., complete and consistent) collective judgments. A frequently mentioned route to avoid dictatorships is to allow incomplete collective judgments. We show that this route d...

Characterizing Vickrey allocation rule by anonymity

We consider the problem of allocating finitelymany units of an indivisible good among a group of agents when each agent receives at most one unit of the good and pays a non-negative price. For example, imagine that a government allocates a fixed number of licenses to private firms, or that it distributes equally divided lands to households. Anonymity in welfare is a condition of impartiality in...

Psychology Implies Paternalism? Bounded Rationality may Reduce the Rationale to Regulate Risk-Taking

Behavioral economists increasingly argue that violations of rationality axioms provide a new rationale for paternalism—to “de-bias” individuals who exhibit errors, biases and other allegedly pathological psychological regularities associated with Tversky and Kahneman’s (1974) heuristics-and-biases program. The argument is flawed, however, in neglecting to distinguish aggregate from individual r...
